- 'Red Dog' is a film based on a collection of outstanding tales from real people about a real dog in Australia, the thing that caused the book to be so successful around the world was that it was about how one dog was adored by the entire town and everyone had an individual tale to tell about Red Dog.
If this Australian movie is on DVD near you, it comes highly recommended, but have a big box of tissues nearby. You will need them! While I am not a big fan of Australian movies, I gave Red Dog a chance, and am so glad that I did.The movie is based on a true story of a Kelpie/cattle dog cross (sometimes called a Red Kelpie) who lived from 1971 until November 21, 1979. Red Dog was well known for his travels through the Pilbara region of Western Australia.Mostly a dog without an owner, he hitched rides all over the outback, until one day he met the man who was to become his master, American John Grant, a bus/truck driver with Hamersley Iron. Grant's work allowed Red to travel as far as Perth, Broome, Roebourne, Point Samson and Port Hedland.I won't go too far into the story, as this would spoil the plot, but Red Dog basically ended up uniting the entire town of Dampier and when he passed away a statue and memorial stone was erected in his honour. Parents need to know that Red Dog: True Blue is the tale of a young boy, a motorbike, and a dog set in Western Australia at an outlying desert cattle station. The movie is the fictional origin story of a legendary dog first seen on film in 2011's Red Dog, a box office and critical success.

Imagine a dog so independent and yet overtly sentimental with a strong sense of rights to stop a car and get a lift; to hitchhike through the great continent in search of his dead master. Red Dog supposedly was also given a bank account by the Bank of New South Wales, which is said to have used him as a mascot and sales tool with the slogan
“If Red banks at the Wales, then you can too”.
The movie Red Dog (2011) rolls out in set pieces like chapters of the book, each episode celebrating the life and times of the Red Dog. The plot showcases miners reminiscing their tales about the stray that changed their lives for good. From the lonely Italian worker Vanno to the suicidal Jocko, all were changed for better by Red Dog. But it’s the Red Dog’s relationship with John (American Josh Lucas) and Nancy (Rachael Taylor) that steals the scenes without effort.
Red Dog, the movie has the structure and schema resembling the template of a great family film and yet nothing seems pre-ordained.
